LILLY {WARRIOR PRINCESS}

Meet Lilly Bumpus!  I had the chance last week to meet Lilly and her mom at the Rockin D Ranch in southern California!  It was a meeting that I had looked forward to for a very long time!  Lilly and her mother are two of my all-time heroes!  Together, they epitomize everything this project is about.  I started this project with the sole intent to inspire young cancer fighters that their dreams no matter how seemingly impossible, could come true.  I felt that if I could get them to believe in the impossible that they would more easily believe they would be cancer free.  The cause of raising awareness came later and has now become my cause.  But initially it was all about hope and believing in the impossible.  Lilly was told that she had a 0% chance of seeing her 1st birthday.  She was told that nobody had ever been born with Ewing Sarcoma and lived to tell about it.  Not only did she live to see her first birthday but she is now cancer free and about to turn 3 years old.  Her mom describes Lilly as a fearless warrior!  Like most 2 year olds, Lilly also loves princesses and horses.  So decided to make her a princess warrior.  I wanted the image to be as universal as possible.  She is in front of her army ready to lead them to battle.  Her expression is calm and unflinching as she faces whatever awaits her.  I purposefully did not show what she is facing because it doesn’t matter.  She can face anything because she has her own army behind her waiting to support her and fight along side her.  The fight is dangerous, the outcome uncertain, but she doesn’t care.  Come what may, she will fight on and never give up!
